Vintage 1985 Soviet Table Medal 50 Years of Chelyuskin Icebraker Rescue Expedition.#27
$199.95
The beautiful VERY RARE 3-dimensional artwork table medal was issued in Leningrad, USSR by Leningrad Mint in 1985 to commemorate 50 years of the rescue of expedition from the Arctic Ice. THE ARCTIC OCEAN was the scene of the wreck of the Chelyuskin and of a remarkable rescue by aeroplane. In August 1933 Professor Schmidt and a party of scientists sailed in the Chelyuskin in an attempt to prove that an ordinary cargo vessel could voyage through the North-East Passage and back in one season. They were only six miles from the Pacific Ocean when the ice pack firmly trapped the Chelyuskin. For two months the ship drifted slowly northward, until in February 1934 she was crushed and sank. The expedition camped on the ice and reported its fate by wireless. It was not until the middle of April that the first rescue airplanes arrived from their base at Cape Vankarem. The medal is made out of heavy bronze,127 grams, diameter 65 mm, thickness 5 mm, very low 850 pieces mintage. Very rare, we have just one in stock. You buy what you see on the pictures.
