This is large vintage completely hand painted original Ignatius Theophorus icon. The writings in Old Russian Language on the icon name of the Saint. This very rare icon is handmade and completely hand painted in USSR in late 1980s. The icon is blessed by Russian Orthodox Church. It is one of a kind and the artist has made only one. You buy what you see on the pictures. The icon is hand painted by Belorussian artist on thick 3/4” solid heavy hardwood board; heavy 1.8 lb. The icon has two parallel wedges on the back to prevent wood from being warped. This type of wedges monks were using in XV-XIX Centuries for the same reason to save the icons from warping and prolong their life. The icon was lacquered over the painting. The icon has the stamp on the back of the USSR Government Department of Culture with the permission to take the icon out of the USSR. The icon is in very good condition for its age but it has some lacquer imperfection (see pictures). Size is 13 x 8 x 3/4”. Ignatius of Antioch, also known as Ignatius Theophorus, was an early Christian writer and Patriarch of Antioch. While en route to Rome, where he met his martyrdom, Ignatius wrote a series of letters. This correspondence forms a central part of a later collection of works by the Apostolic Fathers. It is difficult to find the completely hand painted icons at that time !!!
